Disney has released the trailer for its live-action reimagining of Moana, offering a glimpse at the studio’s new take on the hit animated story. The film stars newcomer Catherine Laga’aia as Moana, with Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as the larger-than-life demigod Maui.
The preview opens on Motunui, where Moana feels a pull toward the ocean and a destiny beyond her island. Her grandmother, Gramma Tala (Rena Owen), sets the journey in motion, telling her, “The story has just begun,” and warning of a growing darkness beyond the reef. She urges Moana to find Maui and restore the heart of Te Fiti to save her people.
Maui soon makes his entrance, greeting Moana with his signature flair — including an enthusiastic “chee-hoo” — before showing off his shape-shifting abilities. Together, the pair set off across the ocean, facing challenges as they pursue their mission. The trailer closes with Moana asserting her identity, saying, “I’m not a princess. I’m the daughter of the chief, leader of my people.” When Maui asks, “Are you ready to be the hero?” she responds, “Let’s go save the world.”
Directed by Thomas Kail and written by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller, the film blends new elements with the spirit of the original. The creative team also includes choreographer Tiana Nonosina Liufau and costume designer Liz McGregor. Music features contributions from Lin-Manuel Miranda, Mark Mancina and Opetaia Foa’i, with Mancina returning as composer.
Johnson is also among the producers, alongside Dany Garcia, Hiram Garcia and Beau Flynn, while Auli’i Cravalho — who voiced Moana in the 2016 film and its sequel — serves as an executive producer. The cast includes John Tui as Chief Tui, Frankie Adams as Sina and Rena Owen as Gramma Tala.
The original Moana was both a box office hit and an awards contender, earning over $643 million worldwide and receiving Oscar nominations, including one for the song “How Far I’ll Go.”
